Né et elevé dans la région parisienne, Michel Hössler obtient en 1979 un DEUG de biologie végétale à l’université de Paris VI. Il intègre par la suite l’École nationale supérieure du paysage de Versailles (ENSP) et effectue un stage chez Alexandre Chemetoff où il rencontre Olivier Philippe et valide en même temps qu’Henri Bava son diplôme DPLG en 1984 avec Michel Corajoud comme directeur d’études. Dès 1987 et jusqu’à 1990 il enseigne à l’ENSP, dirigeant conjointement avec Henri Bava et Olivier Philippe un atelier de projet. En 1987, l’Agence Ter remporte un concours pour réaliser les espaces publics d’un futur quartier à Kourou en Guyane : les trois associés se relaient sur place pour en assurer le suivi. À partir de 1989, devant la nécessité d’une présence continue à Kourou permettant de mieux comprendre le contexte et de favoriser le succès de l’opération, Michel Hössler décide de développer une antenne de l’Agence Ter en Guyane. Il y restera seize ans pendant lesquels l’Agence Ter expérimentera, dans cette région monodépartementale, dans un rapport de proximité et d’échange avec les différents niveaux d’administration, une pratique de la planification urbaine. En parallèle aux projets territoriaux, Michel Hössler s’attachera à la conception et la conduite de réalisation d’espaces publics de nouveaux quartiers comme à Kourou. En 2005, il retourne vivre à Paris, s’engage activement au sein de l’Agence Ter parisienne et obtient en 2005 un DESS d’urbanisme à l’Institut d’urbanisme de Paris. La même année, il reprend l’enseignement à l’ENSP où il dirige un atelier de projet. En 2011, il enseigne aux côtés d’Henri Bava et Olivier Philippe dans le cadre d’un studio à la Graduate School of Design de Harvard University et il a enseigné l'urbanisme paysager à l'École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Paris-La Villette.

Born and raised in the Paris region, in 1979 Michel Hössler obtained a degree in plant biology from the University of Paris VI. He continued his professional education at the ‘École Nationale Supérieure du Paysage de Versailles ‘ (ENSP) where Michel Corajoud was the Director of Studies. Graduating in 1984 at the same time as Henri Bava, he met Olivier Philippe during an internship with Alexandre Chemetoff. After founding Agence Ter with Bava & Philippe in 1986, from 1987 until 1990 he taught at the ENSP, jointly managing a project workshop with his partners. In 1987, Agence Ter won a competition to design the public spaces of a future neighborhood in Kourou in French Guiana: the three partners initially took turns to be present on site until, in 1989, Michel Hössler decided to open a local branch of Agence Ter to respond to the need for continuous presence to understand the context and assure the success of the operation. During the following 16 years in French Guiana, Agence Ter developed a practice of urban planning which explored a relationship of proximity and exchange with the different levels of administration in this mono-departmental region. In parallel with territorial projects, Hössler focused on the design and realisation of public spaces in new neighbourhoods such as Kourou. In 2005, returning to Paris, he was again active in Agence Ter’s Parisian studios, studying and teaching in the capital: in 2005 he obtained an advanced diploma (DESS) in urban planning at the Paris Urban Planning Institute and resumed teaching at the ENSP, leading a project workshop. In 2011, alongside Henri Bava and Olivier Philippe he led a design studio at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and he has taught landscape urbanism at the ‘Ecole nationale supérieure d'architecture de Paris-La Villette.
